I'm trying to locate "The Sears Radio Theater" shows from 1979 their first year, either with or without commercials.

My understanding of this website is that the material offered is public domain.

Since the show you asked for is 1979, it is probably still under copyright and so could not be offered here.

(Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on either point.)

Yes you are right about that. I believe anything after 1960 or 1965 is copyrighted. However, many OTR sites still offer shows unless and until they receive a notice from the copyright owners. Many sites are really good about promptley removing the shows once that happens. At the present time these shows are available under the name: The Mutual Radio Theater which the show later became know as during it's run, over at Tennesseebillsotr.com as a free download. I don't think he has every episode but he does have many.

Did you look under the Mutual Radio Theater? The show was on the air as the Sears Radio Theatre and then they changed the name to The Mutual Radio Theater and it was on for about another year
